ELEMENT

  • Unique atomic number
  • Unique atomic mass number
  • Made up of only one unique type of atom
  • Symbol consists of 1 or 2 letters

PROTON

  • Positive charge
  • Found in nucleus

NEUTRON

  • Neutral charge
  • Found in the nucleus

ELECTRON

  • Negative charge
  • Moves outside the nucleus
  • Smaller mass than neutral/proton

ATOMIC NUMBER

  • Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
  • Used to identify element (each element has a different number)

ISOTOPES

  • An atom with a different number of neutrons
  • Can be identified by the atomic mass number

ATOMIC MASS NUMBER

  • Amount of neutrons and protons found in an atom
  • Used to identify an isotope

IONS

  • Atoms with different numbers of electrons
  • Anion is gaining a negative (charge)
  • Cation is losing a negative (positive charge)
