IN THE BEGINNING...

  • Body art is arguably the oldest form of art.
  • Archaeological evidence dates body art practices being carried out as far back as the neolithic period 3300 BC
  • Ancient tribes from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Australia adopted these practices into ritutials pertaining to their heritage.

Tribal Body Paint

  • In many early tribal cultures body paint was a symbolic and religious practice.
  • Worn in ceremonies or to represent special meanings.
  • In the Nuba Clan of Southern Sudan face colors represent age and gain respect with the change in face paint.

The HipSTERS OF THE BODY ART WORLD

  • In early Egypt the only mummies found with tattooing were those of women dating back to dated to c. 2000 B.C .
  • The"Iceman" found in the Italian-Austrian region has tattoo patterns, this means the practice could be estimated to be over 5,200 years old.

Early Western Body ART

  • in 1933 famous burlesque dancer Sally Rand was diplayed at an exhibition for a body painting artist in 1933 at the World's Fair in Chicago.
  • This shocked audiences.
  • opened artist to this new art form.
