PRESENTATION OUTLINE

STATE OF MATTER

  • Different forms in which matter can exist
  • Solid, liquid, gas
  • Water: ice, liquid water, water vapor

STATE OF MATTER CONT.

  • Depends on...
  • Space between particles
  • The way in which the particles move

SOLID

  • Fixed volume
  • Fixed shape
  • Little space between particles
  • Particles can vibrate in place

LIQUID

  • Fixed volume
  • Indefinite shape
  • Particles are close together
  • Particles can "slide and glide"

GAS

  • No fixed volume
  • No fixed shape
  • Particles are spread apart
  • Particles can move in any direction

PLASMA

  • Electrically charged gas
  • Common in universe but not Earth
  • Plasma tv's, neon lights, lightning discharges

BOSE EINSTEIN

  • O kelvin is the temperature that molecules stop moving
  • Nonexistent as far as we know
  • Condensates exist when you supercool molecules close to 0 kelvin
