PRESENTATION OUTLINE
ATTITUDES TOWARDS ABORTION
Ladder of Extraction
- Is abortion right or wrong?
- How to judge an ethical issue?
- How intuition and reason can be used to
- judge ethical issues?
- HOWEVER..(contradiction)..AND THEN...
KNOWLEDGE QUESTION:
To what extent does INTUITION contradict REASON in judgment of ethical issues?
PERSPECTIVE 1
Reason is based on a logical system of analysis, while intuition is a gut feeling which can't be further explained.
Gaokao
- all student should arrive on time
- XXX is a student
- XXX should arrive on time
Intuition, by definition, is
self-serving bias in ethical judgment...
Reason leads to more objective judgment.
- Natural Science - biology
- Human Science - economics
COUNTERCLAIM 2
Reason is not purely objective and
intuition is not totally self-served.
THEY ARE INTER-RELATED.
Milgram experiment - how intuition&reason inter-related
emotion - how intuition&reason inter-related
self-seving bias - how intuition&reason inter-related

Untitled Slide
- Because of reason fallacy (fear and authority)
- and self-serving bias of both intuition and reason,
- it can be concluded that....
- reason is not purely objective nor intuition totally subjective.
- REASON and INTUITION are INTER-RELATED.
RESOLUTION
- P1:reason - logical analysis intuition - gut feeling
- CC1:∵intuition is unconscious reasoning ∴P1 NOT VALID
- P2: reason - objective intuition - subjective
- CC2: ∵fallacies and self-servig bias ∴P2 NOT VALID
- CONTRADICTION RESLOVED.
CONCLUSION:
Intuition and reason don't contradict but inter-related in judgement of ethical issues.
(significant because we should identify and balance those two in ethical judgement)
