EUROPEAN EXPLORATION

QUESTION 1: HERNAN CORTES

  • His goal was to explore and later conquer the Aztec Empire
  • He was searching for gold, glory, and god.
  • He was trying to establish new areas for his home country of Spain.

QUESTION 2: POLITICS

  • The political structures were centered around the viceroys
  • These were representatives sent to America by the Spanish
  • There were courts called audiencias to review cases and set up laws.
  • The politics were a bit messed up due to miscommunication

QUESTION 3: SOCIAL HIERARCHY

  • Peninsulares were at the top, they we European born
  • Creoles were next, the second generation
  • At the bottom were indigenous people

QUESTION 4: PORTUGUESE BRAZIL

  • The Portuguese didn't show interest until the Dutch and French arrived
  • They then decided it'd be best to lay claim to the land
  • The Portuguese imported African slaves to work plantations

QUESTION 5: INDIANS AND ENGLISH

  • The French and English pushed out the native people
  • This was an attempt to stake claim to land for farming
  • They had many violent conflicts with the indigenous people
  • Many of these led to wars

QUESTION 6: TREATY OF TORSEDILLAS

  • This treaty divided where the Spanish and Portuguese could conquer
  • This helped determine the government and economy of new colonies
