PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SOLID

  • Solids have a fixed volume and shape
  • They do not flow easily
  • They are not easily compressible
  • Ex:ice, glass, wood, concrete
  • Solid elements:iron, nickel

SOLIDS

  • Solid compounds:sodium chloride, magnesium chloride
  • Homogeneous mixture:steel, ice
  • Heterogeneous mixture:pizza, conglomerate rocks
  • Physical properties:strength, elasticity

LIQUID

  • Fixed volume, assumes shape of container
  • Not easily compressible
  • Flows easily
  • Liquid elements:bromine, mercury
  • Liquid compounds:water, calcium carbonate

LIQUID

  • Homogeneous mixures:sugar water, lotion
  • Heterogeneous mixtures:italian dressing, blood
  • Chemical properties:liquids are cohesive and adhesive
  • Physical peoperties:retention of volume and conformation of shape

GAS

  • Does not have a specific volume or shape
  • Compressible
  • Flows easily
  • Ex:water vapor, helium, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide
  • Elements: helium, neon
