MODULE FOCUS

  • Compare State and CC Math
  • Identify ideas for Universal Access
  • Prepare and Implement an inductive Math Lesson
  • Demonstrate Competence in Math
  • Create an iMovie Trailer
Module 9 leads to your culminating collaborative project. The math lesson you will create in this module will be used as the focus lesson in Module 10.

Additionally, you be introduced to inductive reasoning in lesson planning and implementation.

Most of us are used to creating deductive lesson plans, however, a more powerful tool for learning is inductive reasoning. Here, your students will be asked to think about what they are learning and create mental frames and connections to prior knowledge. This kind of pedagogy stimulates three brain networks: recognition, strategic, and affect.

Recognition or the WHAT of learning: facts, content, stuff, etc.

Strategic or the HOW of learning: strategies, executive functions, action plans.

Affect or the WHY of learning: motivation, engagement, resolve, patience, etc.

This is the paradigm of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). I encourage you to spend some time on the C.A.S.T website. CAST can be a bit daunting, but the site offers--in the introductory page--a good explanation of UDL. Bookmark the site, so you can return to it as you progress through the terms.

What is most important for you to take away from this module is that you recognize that your practice must include multiple access points for learning and demonstrating what was learned.

As you move through the module, you will read and observe videos that offer examples of inductive learning opportunities.

In Activity 9.02, you will practice your learning by identifying a student that will benefit from a UDL designed inductive math lesson. You will diagnose what kinds of supports the student will require, and then in Activity 9.03, you will design and implement the lesson.

Your reflection on this lesson, its creation, and implementation will be the basis for your discussion with your cohort in Activity 9.04.

The technology integration in this module is to create an iMovie trailer about the importance of inductive teaching. Using the iMovie trailer will give you practice in thinking about alternative means of demonstrating understanding.

Because ULD offers multiple access points for showing learning, you can also select another mode of demonstration OTHER than the straight verbal linguistic.

ACTIVITY 9.01

CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK
You will review the Math Framework and the Math Common ACOE Standards. These do unmentioned will give you insight into what student should know and be able to do in math.

Note: The California Content Standards in Math, have been super-seceded by the Common Core Math Standards.
