FREEZE THAW ACTION

THE WHOLE PROCESS

Untitled Slide

Freeze thaw action happens when water collects in cracks in rocks. Some cracks are very small and only contain a few drops of water. Other cracks may be much bigger. When water freezes it expands. A volume of ice is about 9% larger than the same volume of water. As water turns into ice it increases it's volume and puts pressure on the size of the cracks.
