WHO HOLDS THE POWER

  • Either a single leader or a small group of leaders.
  • Some dictators are chosen by election but once elected, the ruler changes the political system.

WHAT ARE THE RULES

  • The dictator(s) make the rules.
  • Only one political party is allowed to exist.

  • Glorification of war
  • National glorification
  • Citizens have an absence of liberty

  • All agencies like schooling, radio, papers, films, and propaganda are controlled by the state
  • Citizens do not have a say in what they want in their govt.

  • Dictator: Mussolini
  • Duration: (1922-1943)
  • He was successful for about 20 years.
  • Threatened a March on Rome if not accepted into the cabinet. The electrification of the Italian countryside.

  • Duration: 1790s- early 1800s
  • He was successful.
  • Napoleonic Wars, mass conscription, continuous efforts to expand his empire.

  • Dictator: Oliver Cromwell
  • Duration: 1649-1658
  • Was not successful.
  • His army was his only strength. Eventually Rump Parliament took over.
