REFUGEE CASE STUDY

BY ALEXIS CORTEZ

CAUSES OF THE OVER POPULATION IN LEBANON

  • The Government of Lebanon passed their open-border policy, because of the social, economic, and political history between their neighbor countries

ISSUES WITH THE SYRIANS GOING TO LEBANAN

  • The problem with the policy was that they were already a semi-perohery, or developing country. Their government was already high in debt, up to several billions. Even before the Syrian war, hundreds of thousands fleeing their country because of war was already negatively impacting Lebanon. Electricity supplies averaged only 18 hours a day, public water was limited to only 3 days per week, and schools were overcrowded. The population of refugees in Lebanon is now approaching 1.2 million, 22 percent of the country's population.

The over crowded public schools in Lebanon are a major issue in the country and have been the subject in news for over a decade. A solution is to make an online education available for the kids or they may have to make some kids be home schooled.

  • Overcrowded public schools and insufficient capacity at government clinics and hospitals that cater for the lower-income population, especially in rural areas, have been the subject of news stories and civil society activism for nearly a decade. The flow of refugees is stretching all of these sectors to the limit.

The lack of shelter is another problem. A lot of the refugee families are forced to live in schools, tents and on the streets. The problem is that the government increased the costs of rent. An easy fix is to have homeless shelters to help people get on their feet and to decrease rent.
