The Civil War was the most bloodiest war in U.S history. The deaths and injuries were mostly thanks to its weapons.

In this presentation you will learn about the technology used in this era, and its devastating effects.

Rifles and Pistols of the War

The Spencer Carbine

  • Most popular weapon of its time
  • Easy to manufacture and less expensive
  • Fires a .52 caliber bullet
  • Can hold seven metallic rimfire cartriges in one magazine

The Enfield rifle

  • Originated in Europe
  • Smuggled by the Confederacy into the south
  • Accurate and shoots a .58 caliber bullet
  • Used by both the Union and the Confederacy

The Colt Model 1860 army Revoler

  • A common weapon in the Union Army
  • Very Reliable
  • Fires a six shot .44 caliber bullet
  • Produced more than 200,000 in manufacturing

Swords and Knives

The bowie knife

  • 12 7/8 inches long
  • Popular weapon used in the Confedracy
  • Used in many different wars 

The sword of general william t. sherman

  • Swords like these are mostly used by cavalry soldiers
  • Most recognized in the battle of Shiloh
  • Manufactured by Ames  Manufacturing Company

The model 1833 dragoon saber

  • Rare due to limited
  • Mostly used by the cavalry
  • Closely similar to another British sword  

Other weapons

The minie ball

  • When used, rifles reloaded faster
  • Helped rifles fire more accurately 
  • Weight was able to break the bones of other soldiers

The gatling gun

  • Was not used very much in the war
  • A six barrel repeating gun
  • A deadly long range gun

This presentation showed you most of the weapons of the war, and although not all of them were shown, they still play a big part in U.S history
