EXPLAINING SLEEP

  • Active Sleep (REM: rapid eye movement)
  • Non Active Sleep (Non-REM Sleep)

ACTIVE (REM) SLEEP

  • dreaming takes place
  • necessary for the brain to develop
  • babies: 50% of their sleep time
  • adolescents & adults: 20-25% of their sleep time
  • mental exercise (demonstration)

TRANSITION

  • a period of change between the two states of sleep
  • babies usually wake-up during this transition
  • adults do not (coping strategies)
  • babies can be helped: transitional objects

ADAPTABILITY

  • Babies have different levels of acceptance of change.
  • Some babies like things done the same way all the time.
  • Some babies don't like things to change.
  • Transitional objects make change or transitions easier.

RHYTHMICITY

  • High: eat, sleep, toilet at the same time each day
  • Easier for parent to predict the baby's needs
  • Low: never know when the baby will ____

SENSITIVITY

  • determines how easily a baby will wake up
  • changes: noise level, light, temperature, handling
  • high: wakes up often
  • low: rarely wakes up, sleeps through

SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME

  • SIDS - a mystery
  • 3 infants die every week (in Canada)
  • Prevention: put babies to bed on their backs
