SKELETAL SYSTEM

  • Bones
  • Ligaments
  • Tendons
  • Cartilage
  • Supports, protects, stabilizes

SCOLIOSIS

  • Abnormal lateral curvature of spinal column
  • Known as "twisted condition"
  • Found in the spine
  • More common in girls
  • Affects approximately 3% of Americans

DIAGNOSIS

  • Family history
  • Stand bend at waist
  • Checking for uneven hips, symmetrical shoulders, skin changes
  • X-ray, MRI, CT scan,
  • Results will determine how severe curve is

TYPES

  • Congenital- present at birth caused by bone abnormality
  • Neuromuscular- abnormal muscles or nerves (spina bifida, cerebral palsy)
  • Degenerative - injury or illness , bone collapse, or osteoporosis
  • Most common- idiopathic- no specific cause
  • Idiopathic is known to be inherited

TREATMENT

  • Based on type and degree of curve
  • 25 degrees and below -observation, physical therapy, massage
  • 25-40 bracing the back
  • 40 and above spinal surgery is suggested
  • Spinal surgery includes screws, rods, and hooks attached to bones of spine
