An ode to the technical women worth knowing from yesterday and today. Inspired by Megan Smith's talk at Startup Grind and the work of game designer Roberta Williams, who got me interested in technology at a young age thanks to her awesome Kings Quest series.

Katherine Johnson, Space Scientist, Nasa

Katherine Johnson was a space scientist who calculated the trajectory of the 1969 Apollo 11 mission. She worked at NASA's Langley Research Center. She's co-written 24 scientific papers, only one of which have been attributed to her.

Kimber Lockhart is the Senior Director of Web Application Engineering at Box. As a student at Stanford University, she founded the startup, Increo Solutions, which was acquired by Box in 2009.

Padmasree Warrior is the Chief Technology and Strategy Officer (CTO) of Cisco Systems, and the former CTO of Motorola, Inc. Warrior received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1982. She holds masters in chemical engineering from Cornell University. She's been both criticized and recognized for her work in technology.

Roberta Williams, Co-founder, Sierra

Roberta Williams is an American video game designer, writer and a co-founder of Sierra On-Line. She is most famous for her pioneering work in the field of graphic adventure games with titles such as Mystery House, the King's Quest series, and Phantasmagoria. She is married to Ken Williams and retired from her career in 1999. Roberta Williams is considered one of the most influential PC game designers of the eighties and nineties, and has been credited with creating the graphic adventure genre.

Grace Hopper, Computer Scientist, U.S. Navy Admiral

"It's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to get permission."
Grace Hopper was a computer scientist and U.S. Navy rear admiral. She was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark 1 computer, used near the end of World War II. She popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, one of the first modern programming languages. She is credited with popularizing the term "debugging" for fixing computer glitches (inspired by an actual moth removed from the computer).
