  • Plunged two miles to the ocean floor after sides wiping an iceberg
  • Happened April 15, 1912
  • More than 1,500 people lost their lives
  • 740 survivors out of 2240

CAUSE

  • Individual bulk heads were indeed water tight, but
  • Water could spill from one compartment into another.
  • The jagged underwater portion of the iceberg slashed a
  • 300-foot gash below the ships water line causing it to fill with water

  • The boat had 16 life boats, along with four engelhardt
  • "Collapsible", could accommodate 1,778 people... The
  • Titanic when full could carry 2,435 passengers, and a crew of 900
  • Men Approximately Brought the capacity to more than 3,300 people
  • Available seats for only one third of those aboard

  • Stopped In Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown now known as
  • Cobh, Ireland, and the ship set sail for New York with 2,240 passengers
