WHAT MARLA SHOULD DO TO ESTABLISH HER MILK SUPPLY

  • getting as much rest as she can
  • eating a nutritious diet
  • drink plenty of liquids
  • Let your baby get as much milk from your breasts as possible
  • If you don’t have the opportunity to nurse your baby during the day, you might want to pump your breasts and store the milk.

  • Protects your baby from a long list of illnesses
  • Can protect your baby from developing allergies
  • May boost your child's intelligence
  • May protect your child from obesity
  • May lower you baby's risk of SIDS

ADVANTAGES OF BREASTFEEDING FOR THE MOTHER

  • Reduces your stress level & your risk at postpartum depression
  • Reduces your risk of some types of cancer
  • Faster recovering after childbirth
  • Cheaper than baby formula

ADVICE ON FLUID INTAKE & REST

  • aim to drink at least eight glasses of water or other liquids a day.
  • Be wary of juices and sugary drinks
  • Limit yourself to no more than 2 to 3 cups (16 to 24 ounces) of caffeinated drinks a day.
  • 8 hours of sleep a day is recommended

RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR ADEQUATE SUPPORT FOR SUCCESSFUL BREASTFEEDING

  • If your baby is using the bathroom 5-6 times a day, he is getting enough.
  • Babies nurse for other reasons than hungriness.

INFANT FEEDING AFTER THE RETURN TO WORK

  • Total Breastfeeding—Breastfeed baby during workday (an option for those with childcare nearby).
  • Total Breast Milk Feeding—Breastfeed baby at home and provide pumped breast milk while you are at work. Pump two to three times during an eight-hour day if possible.
  • Partial Breast Milk Feeding—Breastfeed baby at home and provide pumped breast milk and some formula at daycare. Pump as often as possible at work.
