"It was during that attack in the village of Kamator that my friends and I separated. It was the last time I saw Junior, my older brother" (Beah 43). The loss of his friends and brother is an ordeal that Beah must go through in order to begin the transformation along his journey. This trial adds to the list of events that have changed his character and attitude towards war thoughout his story.
This excerpt from Thomas Paine's letter shows the struggle that American soldiers during the Revolutionary War faced. Many were wounded, killed, or left to witness the horrors of war. Like Beah, these trials transformed them as people, leaving some as heroes and others as cowards as Paine puts it.
