ARICA RAINFOREST CONSERVANCY

  • Environmental education programs and school-run tree nurseries in 200 primary and secondary schools.
  • Tree planting to provide alternative sources of timber and fuel-wood so the forests are left untouched.
  • Some 2,000 households now use fuel-efficient stoves.
  • Introduction of fuel-efficient cook stoves that use 50 percent less wood than traditional stoves.
  • Introduction of alternative sources of income, such as fishing ponds and butterfly farms

EUROPEAN UNION HELP

  • The EU supports a programme that will improve the protection of elephants, great apes and rhinos
  • It will strengthen the monitoring of animal populations and poaching
  • in 2012 around 22,000 elephants were illegally killed across the African continent

GREEN REVOLUTION

  • population expected to quadruple by end of this century
  • Africa holds 60% of worlds uncultivated arable land
  • allows for agricultural boom
  • opens up for more jobs
