EUROPE: TIME PERIODS

  • Europe's Medieval Ages lasted from 500-1500
  • The early medival ages were from (c. 500-1000)
  • High medieval Europe was from (c. 1000-1300)
  • Late medieval Europe was from (c. 1300- 1500)

JAPAN: TIME PERIODS

  • In 350 AD, the Yamato clan started
  • Prince Shotoku (one of the greatest emperors) served from 593-621
  • The Heian (golden age) period was from the 800's-1100's
  • Japan started feudalism in the 1630s, this made them last until the 1800s

LORDS

  • Lords were nobles who had knights to defend their land
  • The knights that they had were called vassals
  • Lords payed vassals with pieces of land because armor was too costly
  • The system that the lords and vassals had created was called feudalism

DAIMYOS

  • Daimyos were Japans large landowners
  • Daimyos needed to protect their own lands so they hired Samurai
  • These Samurai (professional warriors) defended them and their property
  • Daimyos payed their Samurai with land and food

KNIGHTS

  • Kinghts were warriors who fought on horseback
  • Knights served their noble lords in exchange for land
  • When a knights lords went into war, the lord called upon the knight
  • A knight could also have two different lords and accept fiefs from them both
  • Knights owned large estates called manors and hired serfs who woked on them

SAMURAI

  • The word samurai comes from the ancient Japanese word for servant
  • Samurai were trained professional warriors
  • Every samurai was supposed to serve his lord and defend their property
  • Samurai were paid with rice and food

KING

  • Various groups from the north and east began to create their own states
  • The ruler of these states was called a king
  • Kings had many issues to reslove so nobles often had to protect their lands
  • Kings the head of power during Ancient Europe

SHOGUN

  • Many of the nobles were unhappy with the way Japan’s government was run
  • These noble families went to war for thirty years
  • The head of the Minamoto tribe won and was the most powerful man in Japan
  • Shoguns kept the emperor as a figurehead, whereas they called all the shots

CASTLES

  • To defend their lands many nobles built castles
  • A castle is a large building with strong walls that can easily be defended against attacks.
  • Castles did not look at all how the media portrays them now
  • Most castles were made out of wood and provided security in times of war

EUROPE: RELIGION

  • In Europe most people were Catholic
  • Missionaries spread Christianity wherever they went
  • Monks practiced Christianity while living apart in isolated communities
  • Monks lived in monasteries, which were built all over Ancient Europe

JAPAN: RELIGION

  • The leaders of the Yamato clans performed highly sacred rituals
  • Buddhism and Confucianism were first introduced in the sixth century
  • During the Heian period, religion was considered a form of art
  • In the 1100s, a new type of Buddhism was formed called Zen-Buddhism
  • Zen Buddhists beleived that people seeking wisdom should practice self-meditation

BUSHIDO

  • The samurai code of rules was known as Bushido
  • Bushido means "the way of the warrior."
  • Bushido required Samurai to be brave and honorable fighters
  • Both men and women of samurai families learned how to fight
  • Samurai were expected to live simple, disciplined lives

CHIVALRY

  • Europe's code of honorable behavior for their knights was called chivalry
  • Chivalry required their knights to be brave and loyal bit at the same time humble and modest
  • It also required them to be especially respectful to women

FEUDAL HIERARCHY

  • In Europe the religion was Christianity, whereas in Japan it was blended
  • In feudal Europe the art focus was religion, whereas in Japan it was nature
  • In Europe, feudalism was the relationship between lords and vassals
  • In Japan, feudalism was when they shut down acess to all other countries

WEAPONS

  • In Europe long swords, iron axes, and morning stars were used.
  • A knights armor was a bit more protective, however it was a lot harder to move in.
  • Samurai used long swords as well as hsd some archers
  • A samurai's armor was easy to move in, however a lot of it was made made of leather.

If a samurai and a knight went in a fight, I believe that a samurai would win. The samurai was a longer sword so they can stay farther while fighting. This would take care if the fact that their armor isn't as superior.
