EARTHQUAKES AND TYPHOONS

MADE BY: FRANCIS QUE 8-VARIARA

THIS E-BROCHURE CONTAINS:

  • Cause and Effects of Earthquakes and Typhoons
  • Preparing before, during and after these calamities
  • Government agencies involved during these calamities
  • A brief introduction about earthquakes and typhoons

WHAT IS AN EARTHQUAKE?

AN EARTHQUAKE IS

THE RESULT OF A SUDDEN RELEASE OF ENERGY IN THE EARTH'S CRUST THAT CREATES SEISMIC WAVES

WHAT IS A TYPHOON?

A TYPHOON IS

A MATURE TROPICAL CYCLONE THAT DEVELOPS IN THE NORTHWESTERN PART OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN

WHY IS THE PHILIPPINES PRONE TO EARTHQUAKES AND TYPHOONS?

IT IS BECAUSE...

THE PHILIPPINES IS LOCATED INSIDE THE PACIFIC RING OF FIRE AND TYPHOON BELT

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKES?

CAUSES OF EARTHQUAKES

  • Subduction in an active subduction zone
  • Strike-slip faults
  • Volcanic activity from magma forcing its way through the crust
  • Impact events
  • Other earthquakes elsewhere on Earth

EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKES

  • Seismic wave propagation
  • Solid liquefaction
  • Tsunamis
  • Landslides
  • Mass movement of landmass above the earthquake

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF TYPHOONS?

CAUSES OF TYPHOONS

  • Warm Waters
  • Moisture
  • Inward Spiraling Winds
  • Monsoon Trough

EFFECTS OF TYPHOONS

  • Heavy rainfall
  • Strong winds
  • Destruction of buildings
  • Flashfloods
  • Storm surge

HOW TO PREPARE BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER EARTHQUAKES

WHAT TO DO BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE

  • Know the earthquake hazards in your area
  • Follow structural design and engineering practices when constructing a house or building
  • Evaluate the structural soundness of buildings and houses
  • Strap or bolt heavy furnitures/cabinets to the walls
  • Check the stability of hanging objects like ceiling fans or chandeliers

WHAT TO DO DURING AN EARTHQUAKE

  • STAY CALM and DON'T PANIC
  • If possible, quickly open the door for exit
  • Duck under a sturdy desk or table, and hold unto it, or protect your head with your arms
  • Stay away from glass windows, shelves, cabinets, and other heavy objects
  • Beware of falling objects, be alert and keep your eyes open

WHAT TO DO AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE

  • Be prepared for aftershocks. Once the shaking stops, take the fastest and safest way out of the building
  • Don't use elevators.
  • Don't enter damaged buildings
  • Don't use telephones unless necessary

WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER A TYPHOON

WHAT TO DO BEFORE A TYPHOON

  • Stock up food, medical supplies, etc.
  • Prepare radios in case of blackouts to get latest storm updates
  • Move your furniture to higher ground in case of flood
  • Evacuate to higher ground if necessary

WHAT TO DO DURING A TYPHOON

  • Listen to radios for storm updates
  • Stay warm
  • Always pray to God

WHAT TO DO AFTER A TYPHOON

  • Check for broken outlets. You might get electrocuted.
  • Clean the house after the flood has subsided
  • Stay inside your house
  • Wait for further announcements relating to the storm condition
