ABRAHAM IS CHOSEN

  • God wanted him to be a blessing to the human family
  • That was God's intentions for Abram's descendants

THREE BLESSINGS

  • God made three specific promises to Abram:
  • 1.) a great nation
  • 2.) a great name
  • 3.) a blessing to everyone
  • God said he would work them into covenants

The First Covenant

Abram is upset by about not having any children and God said it will happen in time. God told Abram to bring animals, lay them out, and cut them in half. A torch and firepot appear and proceed to move between the animal pieces

God said that if he doesn't keep his word, then he would be cut like the animals. God came down to a human level (divine condescension). This represents a covenant God made, which makes them a family.

  • They decided to have Hagar get conceived
  • The children would still be Sarah's according to law

  • Abram would be the ancestor of kings
  • God gives Abraham a greater name- Abraham
  • Gives him a duty- circumcision
  • Might be a symbolic rebuke of the part of the body
