PRESENTATION OUTLINE

STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT IN A FROG

  • Fertilized egg
  • Tadpole
  • Tadpole with small legs
  • Young frog
  • Adult frog

Egg Stage

  • The male frog fertilizes the eggs as they are laid in the water.
  • The eggs are laid in huge clumps, which help protect them.
  • The egg starts as a single cell, then is surrounded by a jelly-like covering.
  • The single cell starts splitting until it has lots of cells.
  • These cells combine to form an embryo. The embryo then grows organs and gills.

TADPOLE

  • After the embryo leaves its jelly shell, it attaches itself to a weed.
  • Then it stays there, developing until it's big enough to break free.
  • It is very vulnerable, so it uses camouflage to protect itself.
  • The tadpoles eat tiny plants called algae.
  • The tadpoles live in the water and have long tails and gills to breathe.

TADPOLE WITH LEGS

  • After 5 weeks, the tadpole starts developing back legs.
  • They then start developing front legs and lungs.
  • The tail gets smaller, and they start coming to the surface to breathe.
  • The tadpole now eats plants and decaying animal matter.
  • Some frogs eat frog eggs and other tadpoles at this stage.

YOUNG FROG

  • The tail is almost gone, and the legs have grown a lot.
  • It has shed its skin and lips at this point.
  • Frogs usually eat their shed skin.
  • The frog will stop eating plants at this stage.
  • It's lungs are almost functioning now.

ADULT FROG

  • After about 11 weeks after the egg was laid, it will be an adult frog.
  • It will live mostly on land now, going in the water sometimes.
  • It will have legs, lungs, and no tail at this stage.
  • The frog will eat insects and worms now.
  • Eventually, it will find a mate and start the whole process over.
