FINDINGS
We found that many of the classrooms we observed base their stations off of the Daily Five.
Most classrooms had incorporated Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, and Word Work. Other stations added to the mix included computer centers, math stations, science, and even a teacher that had recently wrote a grant for mini iPads to utilize in a station.
Most of the teachers we interviewed agreed that it takes lots of work to get organized and then get routine and structure down when using stations in your classroom but it is worth it in the end.
They stated that benefits of workstations include helping students learn to self regulate, work together, and build self confidence by working independently.
As Laronna stated in our literature review working in smaller groups provides a better opportunity for teachers to use instruction that scaffolds the learning and engages the learner.
One of the things I thought I would find researching differentiated workstations is differentiation in all stations and this was not so for every station all the time. However, all stations did incorporate many learning styles that met the needs of each learner.
Our research suggests that there are many different ways and opportunities for differentiation while using workstations.
All guided reading groups in the classrooms we observed were taught to the level of each individual group,
reading stations were organized to have books at the level of each student,
word work stations had many materials to use and options for practicing and building words,
and writing centers had tons of information and resources for learners just beginning their work and students ready to go to the next level
for future research we would recommend observing all grade levels to see how differentiation is used and how students benefited from station work.
it would also be interesting to research more about how learning styles are incorporated in the use of workstations.
My favorite part was getting to observe other classrooms and talk with teachers about their teaching. I took away a lot from this research that I will be utilizing in my own classroom. Which was the goal of our research.
