If you didn't know, wolfs are the origin of dog. The way that happened was they mutated the wolfs and bred other wolfs with each other and created different traits.

Dogs didn't only come from wolfs, they took other traits from animals like foxes. They wanted to get a variety of different traits, and foxes were more tame. They took the foxes and mutated them, and bred them with the wolfs

Now they had a variety of traits. After that they took the different traits and used them for curtain purposes like heavy lifting and carrying messages
