PROBABILITY

WHAT IS PROBABILITY?

Probability is how likely something is to happen.

EXAMPLES OF PROBABILITY

  • How likely it is for a coin to land on heads
  • How likely it is for a dice to land on 3
  • How likely it is for the spinner to land on green

How do you determine the likelihood of an event?

You can make a fraction! You put the number of ways that event could happen over the number of outcomes, and simplify.

FOR EXAMPLE...

THE PROBABILITY OF A COIN LANDING ON HEADS IS 1/2, 0.5, OR 50%.

WHAT IS A COMPLEMENT?

Complements of events are all the outcomes of an event that did not happen. For example, if the outcome of flipping a coin is tails, the complement is heads.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL PROBABILITY?

Theoretical probability is calculated based on theory. Experimental probability is calculated based on the event that happens as an experiment. In other words, you actually do it.
