PRESENTATION OUTLINE
WHAT IS NEGRO ART?
- Negro art is art created by an African-American (songs, paintings, plays, sculptures).
- Many whites think that Negros copy their way of creating art.
- They want them to base their arts off their own Negro culture.
- Some Negros feel ashamed to have their work called "Negro art", they want it to just be called "art", so people don't think of it differently.
MORE ON NEGRO ART:
- Some wanted all Negro art to be called "black art", and only allowed them to put African American people or environment in their paintings.
- Most Negros support and continue making "Negro Art", because that is their culture. They want to show everyone that they are proud of it, and won't change just because people discriminate it.
Now I will show you a few out of the many successful Negro artists.
Famous Negro Singers:
One very famous Negro singer is Whitney Houston. Her best song was "I Will Always Love You". It was LOVED by everyone, and it was #1 for 14 weeks in a row! She was born in 1963, and sadly passed away in 2012.
Another famous Negro singer:
Stevie Wonder is a 64 year old musical genius. He is also blind. Stevland Hardaway Morris is his real name, but people know him as Stevie Wonder. His best album is "Songs in the Key of Life".
Henry Ossawa Tanner is a very famous Negro artist, who lived from 1859-1937. He was the first African-American painter to gain international fame. He painted many biblical scenes. He was most active during the Harlem Renaissance, and the Realism time period.
Betye Saar is a Negro artist who was born in 1926, and is still alive today! Her paintings mostly show American's racism, and stereotypes towards Negros. She was a part of the Black Arts Movement in the1970s.
James Richmond Barthé is an African-American sculptor who lived from 1901-1989. He created many sculptures of people, in different positions. He was active during the Harlem Renaissance. He has won the Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts.
Another famous sculpter, Sargent Johnson, is best known for his Abstract Figurative, and Early Modern styles. He created a well known sculpture of a young African-American boy, named Chester. He lived from 1888-1967.
Maya Angelou lived from 1928-2014. She was a singer, actor, author, poet, and dancer. She was a very successful woman, who everyone loved. She published 7 autobiographies, and several poetry books. Her death caused great sorrow in her many fans, and family.
Langston Hughes was another successful writer. He was mostly famous with his poetry. Langston lived from 1902-1967. He created over 60 books in his lifetime. He is best known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance. People created many rumors, and scandals about whether or not Langston thinks that certain art topics should be left to white artists. He also believes that Negros are afraid to make art based off their own culture, in fear whites will not like it.
Langston accuses some Negro artists of:
A) hating whites
B) overlooking the beauty of black culture
C) seeing more beauty in nature than themselves
D) trying to copy white people's art
Some people don't know whose side Langston is actually on, but I think he is on the Negro's. I think that because even though he is saying all of this, he still continued to create art and poetry that represents black culture, and environments.
In the end, Negro art is now better appreciated by people all around the world. In fact, instead of Negros making it, some whites like to paint or write about the Negro culture. You probably know many white authors, or painters who have created a song, or story based off African-American culture.
