WHIO FACTS

APPEARANCE

  • The tip of a whio's bill is black.
  • Whio's have orange eyes.
  • They have brown feathers on their chest.
  • They have dark blue, dark green and brown feathers on their head.
  • The Whio has greyish-blue feathers on their back which is good for camoflage.
  • They have a dark blue belly.
  • All whio have striped leg and have large webbed feet.

Habitat

  • Whio like fast flowing, clean waters in the north and south island.
  • Whio are only found in New Zealand.
  • You will always find whio in pairs in clean, rough water.
  • They hide in log jams, caves and other places during the day.
  • A pair of whio's territory can be up to 1.5km wide, depending on the quality of the area.

HABits

  • Whio eat small freshwater crayfish, small fish and shrimp.
  • They are mainly active during early morning and late evening periods.
  • Whio are almost classed as nocternul.
  • You can not put whio with other ducks because they will fight for food and territory

Young

  • Whio lay creamy white eggs.
  • Ducklings can fly when they are 70 days old.
  • The female whio sits on the eggs for 35 days.
  • The male whio protects the eggs and finds food for the family.
  • Whio lay 4 to 9 eggs at a time.
  • They nest between auguest and october.

Threats

  • Stoats eat the eggs and the ducklings.
  • Rivers are being used as hydro electric power sources.
  • Habitat loss because hiding places are being destroyed by humans.
  • We humans are disturbing the whio by looking for them in the wild and scaring them away.

How Can we help the whio?

  • Give whio space.
  • Leave them alone, don't try to pat them or hurt them in any way.
  • Keep water, rivers, ponds and lakes where they live clean and don't block the water way.
  • Keep your dogs at home.
  • Don't litter.
  • Report to DOC if you see a whio.
