Goals
- ELF 101/102 - 1 paragraph
- ELF 201/202 - 3 paragraph essay
- ELF 301/302 - 5 paragraph essay
How long is 1 paragraph?
There is no real answer.
(6~10 sentences)
A group of about 6-10 sentences about one topic/main idea.
Every sentence in a paragraph is about the same topic/idea.
A sentence begins with a Capital letter and ends with a period.
The students are studying English.
Travis rode his bicycle yesterday.
BASIC STRUCTURE of paragraph
- Topic Sentence
- Supporting Sentences
- Concluding Sentence
Topic Sentence = tells the reader the main idea of the paragraph.
Supporting Sentences = give more detail, more information about the topic.
Conclusion sentence = summarizes your main idea. (まとめ)
Nature Park is a summer camp. This camp is in California. Teenagers from many countries visit this park. They study English during the summer. They speak English to their friends and eat American food. The teenagers learn a lot about American culture.
Writing is a great way to develop your thoughts & it's a skill you need for life.
WRITING IS NOT...
- A skill that people are born with.
- WRITING TAKES PRACTICE.
- One way to learn to write is to write a certain number of words every day.
Remember: it requires practice and a willingness to rewrite your sentences (i.e. a process).
WRITERS MUST ASK:
- What am I trying to say?
- What one point?
- What one idea?
- What one message?
- Focusing on one idea/message is not easy

- Should capture reader's interest

SUPPORTING SENTENCES
- SS
- Supports your Topic Sentence with details
- Add information about Topic/Main Idea
- Sequence, sensory details & the writer's feelings
SS example
- Perhaps one of the most common uses of the smartphone is the ability to take pictures.
CONCLUDING SENTENCE
- CS
- Repeats the TS, but use different language
- Repeat your Topic & Controlling idea
- Can include a comment by writer
- Why it's important or how you feel
CONCLUDING SENTENCE
- In today's world, the smartphone is an essential tool for millions of people.
- (essential = ふかけつ; 肝心)
