KINGS MOUNTAIN

  • Kings mountain and cow pens helped turn the tide of the war
  • British commander lord Cornwallis dispatched a force of more than 1,200 loyalists
  • Leading the loyalist was major Patrick Ferguson the only British soldier
  • Ferguson died at this battle, being shot at least 7 times.
  • The patriots won.

BATTLE OF COW PENS

  • The battle of cow pens took place on January 17th 1781
  • This battle became known as the turning point of the war
  • Patriots won this battle with their leader Daniel Morgan
  • They went against tarleton

BATTLE OF CHARLESTON

  • Americans suffer their worst defeat
  • Major general Benjamin Lincoln surrenders to British Lieutenant General sir Henry Clinton
  • The British captured 3,000 patriots
  • The guerrilla warfare strategies made the British surrender at Yorktown on October 19,1781

BUFORDS MASSACRE

  • Buford's massacre took place on May 29,1780
  • 350 Virginians under command of colonel Abraham Buford were overtaken by colonel banastre tarleton
  • In the action 115 Americans were killed 151 were wounded and 53 were taken
  • There is now a monument over the battleground

SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN

  • Was the central area of operations in North America in the second half of the American Revolutionary War
  • The southern campaign began with British concern over the course of the war in the north
  • Failure at Saratoga, fear of French intervention, and over-all failure to bring the rebels to heel persuaded British military to turn their attention to the south

BATTLE OF YORKTOWN

  • George Washington led the Americans whole lord Cornwallis led the British
  • The battle was fought on October 9th 1781. The battle ended in victory for the Americans
  • On October 19th the British laid down their arms and surrendered.
  • After this, the American Revolutionary War was virtually over
