What's in IT for me?

Network and Storage Infrastructure Delivery

Good Question

Good question.

Let's start by reviewing....

My Team

Two sides to the team, as similar and as different as coke, and pepsi.

Untitled Slide

As Peanut Butter, and Jelly

Untitled Slide

As AC and DC

Untitled Slide

As Peas and Carrots, and go together just as well.

Network
Side

Let's start with the Network side of the team

Untitled Slide

The best way to do this is to explain Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs?

Basic needs begin at the bottom, and the top is where you're most productive as a human.

The network team believes this is not entirely accurate.

Untitled Slide

This is a bit more accurate.

I'm sure the end-point delivery team believes...

Untitled Slide

Battery is more important.

Untitled Slide

Let's try my point from a different angle.

Pop Quiz

What do the following have in common?
Read slide.

Power

Power

Phone

Phone.

Water

Water.

NETWORK

Network.

Untitled Slide

give up?

Untitled Slide

They are all utilities.

Untitled Slide

Flip the switch, light comes on.

Same is expected for the network.

Connect desktop, phone, laptop, it just works.

Untitled Slide

Flip the switch, light comes on.

Same is expected for the network.

Connect desktop, phone, laptop, it just works.

And now for something completely different

And now for something completely different

Untitled Slide

The yin to the yang of the network is....

Storage side

and some other stuff
Storage

Untitled Slide

Let's talk servers.

Not those servers.

Untitled Slide

These servers.

We run a hypervisor, which is highly dependent on physical resources, one of those being storage, or disk.

Untitled Slide

These sort of disks.

What do you do with these disks?

You store data.

Untitled Slide

Not that kind of data.

Untitled Slide

Business data

Logistics data

Supply data

Demand Data

Untitled Slide

Medical data

Patient safety data

Customer request data

Price data

Data that we use to make better decisions, hire better people, develop better products...

Untitled Slide

to save lives.

That escalated quickly

WELL....
Alright... take a breath.

Back to what the storage side of my team does...

Untitled Slide

They manage the IBM gear that runs our AIX infrastructure that powers most of our SAP platform.

Untitled Slide

Looks sort of like this stuff, cool right?

Untitled Slide

They also do...

Untitled Slide

Backup!

Not that kind of backup...

Untitled Slide

The kinda backup where data is sent to a different location to protect the system in the event of a failure.

That data can be used to restore systems, or services.

The backup guys believe one thing for sure...

Untitled Slide

TAPE SUCKS.

Untitled Slide

These kind of tapes.

They want to take these tapes and replace them with disks...

Untitled Slide

These disks.

Cool, right?

No More!

Keep going you say?

Okay. We are almost a third of the way through.

Untitled Slide

They do web stuff too.

Domains management.

DNS

Web application platforms maintenance.

Dabble in writing their own applications too!

Untitled Slide

NOPE!

Untitled Slide

They also do monitoring.

They even have a vision for this!

Untitled Slide

So.

I've heard you loud and clear.

Review

  • Two sides of the same team
  • Network folks do network stuff
  • Storage guys do storage things, and some other stuff
  • So? Why do I care? What can they do for me?
  • Is it second lunch yet?
Let's review.

Untitled Slide

Since I'm no closer to answering the question of what's in IT for you?

Let's reset.

Untitled Slide

READ slide

So what matters?

Untitled Slide

People

How do we know this?

Untitled Slide

Because people are at the center of our core values.

I like to make it interactive.

By a show of hands, who agrees that people are what we value the most.

Okay -- now.

Same question, this time a little different, by a round of applause, who agrees that people are what we value the most?

Untitled Slide

Okay. Now that the stage is set.

Let's kick this presentation off with our focus on what we value the most, our people.

Untitled Slide

So who is the network and storage team?

I think a big portion of who we are as people, is what we believe and what we value, along with people.

"I think we are what we believe, and value." - Matt Sanders, 22-JUL-2015, ~2:30pmISH

So here is a word bubble displaying my teams collective values.

The bigger the word, the more times that word occurs in the text you drop in.

Do you see anything surprising? Interesting?

Untitled Slide

Let's peel back the layers of the onion and dig right in.

WIIFM?

So what's in IT for me?

Untitled Slide

My team is what is in IT for you.

Sure.

Network.
Storage.
UNIX.
Linux.
Backups.
Web.
Monitoring.

But.
Why stop there?

Ask, engage, build relationships, leverage their skills, and their values, who they are.

And this is a good thing.
