Happy Birthday!

  • Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey) was born on July 7th, 1940.
  • John Lennon was born on October 9th, 1940.
  • Paul McCartney was born on June 18th, 1942.
  • George Harrison was born on February 25th, 1943.

The Beatles started out as The Quarrymen in Liverpool. Their members were Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Stu Sutcliffe, and Colin Hanton.

After playing briefly in England, the Quarrymen needed to make some changes. Among these changes were name changes and the loss and gain of members.

The Quarrymen became the Silver Beats, the Silver Beats the Silver Beatles, and finally the Silver Beatles become the Beatles we know and love.

Pictured here is (left to right) George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe, and John Lennon. Stu Sutcliffe left the group in the early 60s so that he could go to school. There he died from a cerebral hemorrhage.

Another example of a change in members is Pete Best and Ringo Starr. After Pete Best, the Beatles' drummer, was fired, the Beatles hired another, more experienced drummer: Ringo Starr. Ringo had previously been in the band called Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. This is also where Ringo Starr got his new stage name.

For a few more years after they officially became the Beatles, the Fab Four were asked to travel across the pond and come to America. They finally did this in 1964, just one year after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

the Beatles have shaped modern culture.

They were inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 1988.

Fun Facts!

  • The Mother Mary in "Let It Be" refers to Paul's own mother, not the biblical figure.
  • Sir Paul McCartney was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997.
  • "Lucy in the Sky With DIamonds" was inspired by a drawing by John Lennon's son Julian.
  • The same son as mentioned above was also the muse for the Lennon McCartney hit "Hey Jude".
  • When the Beatles made their first appearance on the "Ed Sullivan Show", over 73 million people tuned in

Out of 13 of the Top 20 Best Selling Albums of the 1960s in the UK, 10 of them are albums by the Beatles.

With talented singers, musicians, and songwriters, the Beatles are undeniably one of, if not the, greatest bands of all time.

Out of the 4 Beatles, only two are still alive: Paul McCartney (72) and Ringo Starr (74).
John Lennon was assassinated on December 8th, 1980 at age 40. George Harrison died on November 29, 2001 at age 58 of lung cancer.
