Robert Smalls was born in 1839. He was born on a plantation in Beaufort. His father was a white plantation owner.

Robert Smalls had a fairly large impact in the Civil War and its outcome. After he took the confederate ship the Planter to the Union blockade. He was set free and then he told much vital information to Union about the Confederate defenses in Charleston.
