THE CHICANO MOVEMENT

CONDITIONS

  • Farmworkers faced low pay
  • Long hours
  • Unsafe working conditions (pesticides)
  • 1936 national labor relations act does not include Farmworkers, making it difficult to join unions
  • Farmworkers did not have access to toilets or water

ACTIONS

  • 14 million participate in Grape boycott
  • Refused to work until needs were met
  • In 1966, Cesar Chavez leads 300 mile march from Delano to Sacremento
  • In 1968, Cesar Chavez goes on a hunger strike

OBSTACLES

  • Bikers attack and jail strikers
  • Police harmed and arrested thousands of farmworkers
  • 2 farmworkers were killed

ACHEIVEMENTS

  • Unsafe working conditions were made safer
  • Farmworkers received higher wages
  • A medical plan was made for the farmworkers
  • Farmworkers gained access to toilets and water on farms
