GIOVANNI DA VERRAZZANO

  • He chartered along the Atlantic coast of North America between the Carolinas and Newfoundland, in 1524.
  • Giovanni da Verrazzano explored for France.
  • He made his discoveries in the 1520s.

JACQUES CARTIER

  • His exploration of the St. Lawrence River allowed France to claim Canada.
  • He was sent by King Francis I to the New World in search for riches.
  • His exploration happened in 1534.

SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN

  • Established Quebec, then mapped the Atlantic coast and the Great Lakes.
  • He was exploring for the French.
  • He started his expedition in 1603.

JACQUES MARQUETTE AND LOUIS JOLIET

  • They went on an expedition to map and explore the Mississippi River.
  • They were chosen by the French to go on this exploration.
  • They left for their expedition in 1673.

SIERRA DE LA SALLE

  • He lead an expedition down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers, claiming what is now Louisiana.
  • Sierra de la Salle was exploring for France.
  • He made his discovery in 1643.

  • This exploration happened in 1497.

FERDINAND MAGELLAN

  • He led the first European voyage to circumnavigate the world.
  • He did this while in service of Spain.
  • This voyage happened in 1519.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

  • He discovered the "New World" of the Americas.
  • This expedition was sponsored by King Ferdinand of Spain.
  • He left for his expedition in 1492.
