Gerald - loved his wife and believes that it wasn't an accident

Violet - wants to do the right thing but is also loyal

Evelyn - Unsure what to believe but sticks by his wife out of love

The Ending

Faye and Evelyn drive away from their house as the police arrive. They escape but Faye is haunted with guilt over what she did.

The 1920s were a very formative time for literature, it gave rise to a kind of satirical writing and some of the greatest writers of the 20th century.
