NELSON MANDELA (1918-2012)

Who?
Rolihlahla Mandela (Nelson) was born into the Madiba clan in Mveso, Transkei on July 18 1918.

Mother: Nonqaphi Nosekeni
Father: Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela

What?
Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa. He was arrested on the 5th of August 1962, only because the white were scared of the power that he holds. He was released on the 11th of February 1990, Nelson then went on to become the President of South Africa

  • Attends African National Congress (A.N.C): 1942
  • Co-founds the A.N.C Youth League: 1944
  • Elected Secretary of the A.N.C.Y.L: 1948
  • Elected President of the A.N.C.Y.L: 1951
  • A.N.C is banned: April 8 1960

Where?
Nelson Mandela completed most of his work in South Africa where was born and died. Nelson didn't really have much of a choice as to where he spent his time as he spent around a third of his life in prison. Nelson only left the country once and that was Military training, and even then he was only gone for about four months.

Why?
Nelson did most of his work because he was sick of being treated like a nobody and he wanted to make a difference for himself, and his race. He was put in jail because he was black and he thought that wasn't right so he fixed it.

How?
Nelson was a major part in the change of racial discrimination in South Africa. He won a Nobel Piece prize and became the president of South Africa. This was so major because he was the first black president in a racist country.
