  • Death: 212 BC
  • City of Birth: Syracuse, on the island of Sicily, later moved to Alexandra
  • Fun Fact: Euclid lived in Alexandria prior to Archimedes' time.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO MATH

  • Created the Archimedes Screw, a method of irrigation.
  • Found buoyancy.
  • Created the lever, pulley, and the fulcrum.
  • Developed hydrostatics, or the branch of physics dealing with liquids at rest.
  • Work with geometry and calculated the volume of spheres.
