WOMEN IN ANCIENT ROME.
The roman people were known as commoners.
The woman in Ancient Rome were not allowed to vote.
The woman were house wives and took care of the children.
Lower class woman would work outside the home.

Men would work for their family.
Most of them were warriors.
If they were slaves, they were gladiators.
Considered higher than women.

JULIUS CAESAR
Julius Caesar completed the conquest of Spain and Gaul.
He became dictator for life.
Julius was then killed by the senate, because he was too ambitious.

Rome is located on the west coast of Italy.
Alps. Mountains to the north.
The sea to the west protected them from invasions.

The Romans believed in mythology and Greek mythology but by different names.
They were polytheistic (believed in many gods)

The twelve tables.
Written to protect the plebeians.
All citizens were "equal" under the law.
Forced officials had the same laws as commoners.

Patricians-wealthy landowners.
Plebeians- small farmers, merchants, (commoners)
Early roman king was overthrown to create a republic.
The senate was made up of patricians and consuls.

275 BC
Ruled entire peninsula.
Defeated Carthage (Northern Africa) in Punic wars.
Acquired territories in Spain, North Africa, and the eastern Mediterranean.
Augusta caesar, removed corrupt officials and became the first emperor.

CHRISTIANITY
Romans crucified Jesus for claiming he was the messiah.
Romans that believed in Jesus and Christianity were persecuted because they refused to worship roman gods.
Once the 4th century emperor Constantine had a vision before a battle he was convinced to convert to Christianity.
He proclaimed freedom of worship for Christians.
Christianity became the official religion in the Roman Empire.

ENTERTAINMENT
Romans were entertained watching gladiators fight for their life.
The coliseum was were they went to become entertained.
Gladiators were usually slaves.
