WHY DID PEOPLE USE SLANG IN WW1?

  • To abbreviate or make new words or terms
  • ANZAC=Australian and New Zealand Corps
  • Duck-board=Boards on bottom of trenches
  • VAD=Voluntary Aid Detatchment
  • Ack-Ack=Antiaircraft fire

HUMOR

  • Vaseline=Butter
  • Daisy Cutter=Explosive shell
  • Old sweat=Experienced soldier
  • Axle grease=Also, butter
  • Paint=Jam

WHY WERE THEY IMPORTANT?

  • Terms from WW1 are used today

NO MAN'S LAND

  • WW1=area between two front lines
  • Today=Somewhere people don't go

DUD

  • WW1=Unexploded shell
  • Today=Something that doesn't work

  • WW1=Small, weak soldier
  • Today=Small object or person
