Although largely panned upon release, it soon gained notoriety as a midnight movie when audiences began participating with the film at the Waverly Theater in New York City in 1976. Audience members returned to the cinemas frequently and talked back to the screen and began dressing as the characters, spawning similar performance groups across the United States.
Tim Curry, Patricia Quinn and Nell Campbell reprise the same roles here that they’d played in the original stage production. Rocky Horror Picture Show was Tim Curry's feature film debut. In order to save money, O'Brien cast either actors from the original production (Tim Curry, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell, Jonathan Adams, and himself) or unknowns (Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon, Peter Hinwood, and a pre-Bat Out of Hell Meat Loaf)
