PRESENTATION OUTLINE

OCEAN IMPACTS

BY: Jared Meeks

Inadequate protection for our oceans. There are only few parts of the ocean that are protected. Only about 4% of our ocean has not been effected by human pollution and interaction. It is causing adverse effects on many species there.

HUMAN IMPACT

  • Many areas of the ocean are left unprotected
  • These areas are victim to, overfishing
  • Waste deposition
  • And vital parts of the ecosystem becoming undone

SOCIAL/ ECONOMIC IMPACTS

  • Due to the tampering with oceanic environments:
  • Million year old species have been pushed to the brink of extinction
  • Plastic pollution could cost developing and industrialized nations 1.27 billion
  • Effects tourism, and the well being of communities in the area

CREATING MPAs

  • Safeguard the oceans rich diversity of life
  • Provide safety for both endangered species and commercial fish pop.
  • Provides alternate source of income for local peoples
  • Ex: tourism and park management
  • Provide better security against environmental change, ie. global warming

PROBLEMS

  • Conflicting priorities coming from many different sectors
  • Like industry, artisanal fishers, and commercial fishers
  • Managers rely on community participation, and volunteers
  • The ocean is so vast just protecting sparce areas would not help
  • Cannot patrol marine areas or carry out essential research
