Slavery

  • Africans in the colonies include free people, servants, and enslaved people
  • First enslaved Africans arrived in Virginia in 1619.
  • There are instances where enslaved people could purchase their freedom
  • In 1700 plantations had come to rely on slave labor

Crops

  • They grew rice, tobacco, grains, and indigo
  • Virginians were growing tobacco for profit
  • Rice was a profitable crop traded around the world
  • Settlers later learned to raise indigo

Religion

  • The southern colonies where roman Catholics  
  • A family declared freedom of religion for all Christians
  • Slaves were brought into the colonies and were usually non-Christian

  • They enjoyed the warm weather
  • The weather was perfect for their growing season
  • As the men where working in the field the wives would be working inside
