20.9k tweets since joining in july 2008
There's been 2388 since that date as of 14 Jan this year
so thats nearly 9 tweets a day, every day!

need to engage regularly

not just liking, RTing etc

have something to say

willingness to be a little provocative/controversial

Impact

Impact is a heavily loaded world in academia these days, but in essence, we want to have some sense of impact, beyond 'likes' and 'retweets', i.e. tangible results such as use of research, increased citation rates, requests to present, collaborate and write.

Place

  • Peers and colleagues
  • Accessibility
  • Popularity within your discipline
  • Time investment
  • Appeal to you personally
choosing where to 'be' online

peers can help you with support, can tell you what has worked for them

need to be able to use it- might mean using it on mobile device

give things time, don't give up too quickly

ultimately, it can be a case of 'your time has come'- when it just suddently clicks

being forced onto a platform can work- i.e. kath stevens- mooc

appeal vs. time- blogging takes time, but is almost as familiar as writing for a journal, so might appeal.

Productivity

  • Don't just stand there, do something!
  • Be yourself
  • Share
  • Join conversations
  • Start conversations
need to engage, not just rt and like

an inactive account is worse than an empty filing cabinet, its just taking up space!

need to have something to say, be controversial, share things like papers, blog posts, video

POPULARITY

  • See last slide!
  • And accept that "it takes time to build"

Speed things up...

Speed! the results of publication come slow, the results of social media come fast and can be measured/counted automatically

spread of a message (no of retweets, or rt from a tweeter with a large following)

views of a blog post

networking- you can use social media to widen your academic contacts, set up collaborations, find PhD students (Tricia Greenhalgh)

conferences- twitter can be a godsend if you feel under pressure, from anywhere, to 'network' but are shy. tweet-ups can be easily arranged, with common interests already established

...citations and invitations

old school things can be gained too, like more views/cites of your papers (altmetrics) and invitations to present and write. (following journal editors helps here)

Chicken vs. Egg

  • Want more staff to use social media
  • Staff want proof that it works, first!
  • Need to get people using it, to get proof :(
  • Two pronged attack!

Prong 1

  • Develop a small group of staff
  • Chose one tool: Twitter
  • Gave training and support and pestered
  • Monitored activity

Results!

  • Most are now tweeting 1-2 a week or more
  • Most have 40 or more followers
  • Some much more active than others

  • Developed a group Slideshare account
  • Uploaded lots of slide shows
  • Half left to their own devices
  • Half got tweeted

some don't require much effort beyond the set-up (scholar) , others are potentially quite demanding (twitter).
