Anaphylaxis

What is Anaphylaxis?

  • Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can be fatal
  • Onset of symptoms can happen in a few seconds or minutes after being exposed to allergen
  • Chemicals released during Anaphylaxis can cause bodily harm
  • Sends someone to the emergency room every 3 minutes or 200,000 a year

Causes

  • Exposure to allergens
  • Can include: Foods, medications, venom, latex

Potential SYMPTOMS

  • Skin Reactions, Hives and Itching
  • Constriction of the airways and swollen tongue/throat
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Nausea, fainting
  • Weak or rapid pulse, Heart Attacks

Treating Anaphylaxis with First Aid

  • Put person in comfortable position, elevate legs
  • Check pulse and breathing
  • Administer CPR if necessary
  • Treat with EpiPen or antihistamines if available

Long Term/Advanced Treatment

  • Administer Adrenaline (epinephrine) to reduce allergic reaction
  • Give extra oxygen to compensate for restricted breathing
  • Administration of cortisone/antihistamines via IV
  • Administration of beta-agonists to improve breathing
