Is it appropriate?

The most important question to ask yourself before posting content to your social media accounts is: Is it appropriate?

You need to ask this question because your current and potential future employers are likely to check up on it.

A new survey from CareerBuilder found that 43% percent of employers use social networking sites to research job candidates, up from 39% in 2013 and 36% in 2012. Additionally, 12% of employers don’t currently research candidates on social media, but plan to start.

Even once you've landed the job, you still aren't off the hook because employers have been know to fire employees for their bad judgement online.

Why employers pass on candidates:

  • Inappropriate photos
  • Evidence of drinking/drug use
  • Bad mouthing previous company/clients
  • Poor communication skills
  • Politically incorrect comments
The CareerBuilder survey found that 51% of employers who research job candidates on social media said they’ve found content that caused them to not hire the candidate, up from 43% in 2013 and 34% in 2012.

The most common reasons to pass on a candidate based on their social media are listed on the slide.

Why employers hire candidates:

  • Personality looked like a good fit
  • Evidence of qualifications
  • Candidate appears well-rounded, creative
  • Great communication skills
  • Professional image
However, that same survey found that 31% of employers who research candidates on social networking sites say they’ve found content that made them more likely to hire a candidate. What’s more, 23% found content that directly led to them hiring the candidate, up from 19% in 2013.

The most common reasons to hire on a candidate based on their social media are listed on the slide.

Main themes of social media posts that cost people their jobs:
Racist/Sexist/Politically Incorrect statements
Disparaging company, boss, or coworkers
Breaching client confidentiality
Evidence of playing hooky or slacking at work
Unprofessional/Inappropriate conduct

What you think is innocent, harmless, or funny just might cost you your job.

False Sense of Security:

  • My account is private.
  • It's my PERSONAL account.
  • "Disclaimer: Tweets are my own."
  • It's my right to Freedom of Speech.
Don't kid yourself thinking that it can't happen to you!

Just because you think your account is private doesn't mean that an employer won't find out what you post.

What you post on your PERSONAL account is still relevant for the company. People want to follow people not companies; therefore, your account can have more reach than the company account.

Providing a disclaimer that your tweets are not reflective of the views of the company just doesn't hold water.

Suing an employer on the basis of protected speech has rarely held up in court, often due to technicalities in the law and the rights of the employer.
