FREEDOM OF SPEECH

HOW FAR SHOULD IT GO?

Should freedom of speech have no limits?

CHARLIE HEBDO Terrorist attack: the consequence of abusing freedom of speech!

Which one comes first?

Which one comes first?

  • Equality
  • Freedom of speech
  • Freedom of thought
  • Honor and reputation
  • Dignity

From my point of view...

  • Freedom of speech has been wrongly focused.
  • Each country approaches the subject differently.
  • The limits of freedom of speech are totally irregular.
  • There are still countries that don't accept it as a human right.

Some examples

  • According to the First Amendment of the US Constitution: Offences or threats about personal traits are permitted.
  • 70% of Americans claim that people should have the right to free speech, even if their words are highly offensive.
  • Iran's 1985 press law prohibits "discourse harmful to Islam" and "public interest"

As Human Rights Watch points out, Iran's 1985 press law gives the government tools to censor, restrict, and find offense in any behavior and expression of individuals

If you ask me, one's rights end where someone else's begin

"Freedom of speech should not be used to provoke and humiliate the values and beliefs of other people"
- Ban Ki Moon
(Secretary-General UN)

NOWADAYS

  • Freedom of speech is used along with the social and economic influence of the media as a tool to attack the rights of minorities and individuals.
  • People are becoming increasingly hypocritical about freedom of speech by having double standards.

For instance:

  • Natalia Paris, whose reputation was damaged by the media's comments about her silliness.
  • Our country, which was branded as drug dealing community because of a small group of criminals.
  • The Muslims, which are discriminated by generalizing radical groups and mocking their culture.
