ACORNS WERE AN IMPORTANT STAPLE FOOD FOR THE LUISEÑO.

AFTER THE LUISEÑOS GATHERED

ALL THE ACORNS, THEY STORED THEM IN GRANARIES.

The Luiseño used a hammerstone to take off the acorn shell. The winnowing tray is then used to take off the skin.

A mortar and a pestle were used to grind the acorns into a fine flour called meal.

The Luiseños used a process called leaching to remove the tannic acid from the acorn meal to make it edible.
