Minnesota

  • In 1991, passed legislation to create the first legislated charter school.
  • The new law allowed the formation of 8 new student-centered public schools.
  • The charter schools were created to address specific needs of students.

  • City Academy in St. Paul opened in 1992
  • There are over 150 Charter Schools currently in Minnesota

  • passed similar legislature for Charter Schools in 1992
  • California has the highest number of charter schools of any state in the country with 1,130 schools serving over 500,000 students as of fall 2013.

Funding

  • For his proposed budget for 2006, President George Bush asked for $219 million dollars in grants for 1,200 new and existing charter schools.
  • Bush also asked for $37 million to help charter schools to help them obtain the needed credit to renovate, lease, or buy school facilities.
  • He also asked for $50 million for a Choice Incentive Fund for an innovative voucher system that would allow parents to transfer their students to other public, private, or charter schools.

CREDO Study Finds Los Angeles Charter Schools Outperform District School Peers

  • Charter schools in Los Angeles are generating learning equivalent to an extra 4 months in math and 2.5 months in English language arts. 
  • Furthermore, the report finds that the performance of charter management organizations (CMOs) are helping students learn at rates far faster than within traditional public schools (an additional 3 months of learning in reading and an astounding 6 months in math).

San Diego Charter Community Gathers Today to Protect Students and Oppose AB 1531

  • On April 16, 2014, Assembly Bill 1531 passed with a 4-3 in favor of the bio
  • This bill would force charters to give up their independence and revert to traditional district schools
  • AB 1531 would require charter school authorizers to select a majority of the nonprofit board members of a charter school.

Ten Charter Schools Named 2013-14 Title I Academic Achievement Award School

  • To receive this distinction, the school must demonstrate that all students are making significant progress toward proficiency on California's academic content standards. 
  • the school's socioeconomically disadvantaged students must have doubled the achievement targets set for them for two consecutive years.
  • he awards are given to one Academic Achievement Award-winning school that has demonstrated exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years 
  • the most progress in closing the achievement gap between student groups.

$7.5 Million in Grants Awarded to California Charter School System

  • State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson announced 20 agencies will share $7.5 million in federal grants to develop or improve California charter schools.
  • hirteen school districts and nonprofit agencies will receive $5.4 million in federal funding as part of the Public Charter Schools Grant Program Planning and Implementation Grant (Round 2).
