CHILDREN

  • 1 quarter of Indian children live in poverty.
  • For ages from 15 to 24, suicide rates are more than double the national average.
  • Native Americans have the highest rate of school drop out.
  • Most girls have suffered sexual abuse.

ADULTS

  • Lack of economic opportunity.
  • They have to leave the reservation to seek work and survive.
  • Overcrowding in Indian housing. The living conditions are comparable to Third World.
  • Running water, telephones and electricity are luxuries.
  • Drug abuse and alcoholism are the most well known health problems.

ELDERLY

  • Grandparents take care of children when their parents are seeking for work.
  • Pharmacies and doctor's offices are non-existent in some communities.
  • American Indians are more likely to die from diabetes and tuberculosis than the rest of Americans.
  • Native languages are dying.
