WHAT IS ANTHRAX

  • infection caused by bacteria called Bacillus anthracis.
  • the bacteria creates spores in your skin
  • bacteria makes a protective shell to cover the germ

SYMPTOMS

  • fatigue
  • joint swelling/ pain
  • memory loss

HOW IS ANTHRAX CAUSED

  • Exposure to spores
  • direct contact with the disease
  • being exposed does not assure sickness

LONGTERM EFFECTS

  • trauma
  • little is known on long term affects

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT

  • use antibiotics
  • vaccine before exposed
  • (ages 18-65) 5 shots over 18 months
  • after exposure: get 3 shots over the next 4 weeks

IS IT CONTAGIOUS

  • not contagious
  • still unlikely to get infected even with direct contact
  • if bacteria does not get into skin, digestive tract, or lungs it will not develope

3 MOST COMMON WAYS TO GET ANTRAX

  • breath 1000+ of spores with anthrax
  • eating meat with spores in it
  • having direct contact with an infected spore to an open wound
